Spam, eggs, rice, kimchi, 2020.

Gouache on paper, 2020

During the pandemic, I accidentally created a series called “rice and egg” where each morning, I documented our breakfast of delightfully plated rice, eggs, and something else.

My husband, who is Filipino, loves a common breakfast called “spamsilog,” which is comprised of fried Spam, buttery garlic rice, and egg of choice.

As the pandemic “wrapped up” in June 2020 and cities started to open up again, I painted this to commemorate the very strange season we just experienced. It was also a nod to the very first breakfast my husband made me when we had started dating. I added a small serving of kimchi to this painting to both insert a piece of myself and talk about how GORGEOUS kimchi, spam, and eggs taste together.
